AI & education strategist. Fifteen years helping foundations and mission-driven teams adopt technology responsibly.
For the Echidna Giving engagement
Sara Cohen is an AI and education strategist with fifteen years of experience working across foundations, NGOs, and governments on responsible technology adoption and foundational learning.
As the Senior Education Technology Advisor at Save the Children US, she was the organization's subject-matter expert on EdTech and AI integration, building inclusive digital strategies and helping shape education policy across a large, mission-driven organization handling sensitive data in high-stakes settings. As an independent consultant since 2018, she has advised foundations, NGOs, and governments on AI strategy, digital transformation, and staff capability. She is currently a Childhood and AI Lab Research Fellow focused on responsible AI, safeguarding, and the guardrails organizations need as AI enters everyday use. She also sits on the advisory board of Nyansapo AI on pedagogy and product, and currently advises the Gates Foundation, through Woodspring Advisory, on AI for foundational learning across Sub-Saharan Africa and India.
For Echidna, that combination fits well. She understands how a foundation makes decisions and how grantees experience them. She has written and applied responsible-AI and data-handling guidance inside an organization rather than in the abstract. And she brings a human-centered design toolkit, including structured interviews, synthesis, and card-sorting exercises, that maps directly onto Echidna's discovery and diagnostic work. She is comfortable translating complex guidance into materials and training that non-technical staff will actually use.
Structured stakeholder interviews, synthesis across distributed teams, and card-sorting: the toolkit Phase 1 runs on.
Hands-on experience drafting and applying acceptable-use and data-handling guidance in a mission-driven organization.
A current research-fellow focus on guardrails, directly relevant to Echidna's privacy and reputational concerns.
Advisory-board work assessing AI-powered education tools for fit, quality, and user experience.
A track record designing role-based training and teacher development for mixed-fluency audiences.
Deep grounding in education, foundations, and the Global South, with current AI advisory at the Gates Foundation.
